It’s not uncommon for job seekers to put their name into a search engine to make sure no potentially embarrassing items pop up, but businesses might want to consider doing this as well to make sure clients and customers aren’t seeing negative content when they do a search. To maintain a good online reputation, companies might want to consider using search engine optimization (SEO).

Alicia Whalen, co-founder of Canadian-based marketing firm A Couple of Chicks Marketing, writes on her IdeaHatching blog that companies should Google themselves frequently to see what others are saying about them. But finding out what’s being said about your firm online isn’t just limited to Google, as Whalen also suggests doing a search on Twitter.

Google Testing Breadcrumb Display in SERPs

Google appears to be testing breadcrumbs in some search results, at least in some areas. If you are unfamiliar with the term breadcrumbs, it refers to the hierarchical display commonly used in site navigation. For example: Home Page>Product Page>Product A Page. Several bloggers have noticed Google displaying these types of breadcrumbs in various places in seemingly random results to some queries.
Google’s use of breadcrumbs appears to only be a test, and a limited one at that. Google has talked repeatedly about sites having good site architecture in the past. This allows Google to more easily and quickly crawl sites.

Google Granted Patent After Six Years

A patent for “systems and methods for improving the ranking of news articles” was granted to Google yesterday. It was originally filed in 2003.
The patent appears to provide a look at some of the factors Google may take into consideration when ranking articles for Google News. As Bill Slawski of SEO by the SEA points out, it is most likely missing a significant amount of elements that Google takes into consideration today, (more…)
